OUR DAYS, ABSOLUTELY, HAVE TO BE ENLIGHTENED (22', France, 2012)

Screening: Fr, 13 Dec., Studio Cinema, 6:00pm

BIEFF 2010 Main Award winner, for EVEN IF SHE HAD BEEN A CRIMINAL, PÉRIOT returns with his OUR DAYS, ABSOLUTELY, HAVE TO BE ENLIGHTENED, a documentary experiment of great emotional power, about freedom and the strength of human affective bonds. We witness a concert given by the inmates of a prison in Orléans. Yet, they remain unseen, beyond the prison walls, all along the film, while the camera looks at those who listen to the music outside, in front of the prison. Silent emotions, the rapt faces of the listeners, humming along the prisoners, and their unrevealed personal histories, form a human gallery of potential stories, born out of the viewer's imagination.

CURATOR'S COMMENT:

“JEAN-GABRIEL PÉRIOT uses nothing but traditional documentary techniques, although OUR DAYS, ABSOLUTELY, HAVE TO BE ENLIGHTENED is more of an experimental film than a classic documentary. With no dialogue or off-screen narration, the protagonists also remain behind the scenes inside a prison from Orléans, which is the setting of a concert held by prisoners, broadcast on 28 May 2011, for a small audience gathered outside the prison walls. Best Short Film at the prestigious Visions du Réel 2012 festival, the film brings to life the considerable emotional, aesthetic, and anthropological potential of this unusual situation. With great subtlety, the film captures a range of emotions: those palpable in the voices of the performers, as well as those visible on the faces of the people listening.” (Maciej Nowicki, Watch Docs Human Rights Film Festival 2012)

“The voices of the inmates are joined together with the day-dreaming faces of the listeners from outside the building, brightly lit by the May sun, appearing as if all of them – those under custody and those in freedom – are led by the same hopes and disillusions, equally deserving compassion.” (Gabriela Filippi, Film Menu, June 2012)
