Bucharest International Experimental Film Festival BIEFF closed on the 20th of March at the Cinema of the Romanian Peasant Museum, after 7 intense festival days, which welcomed an audience of more than 7,000 people to full house screenings and special events.
During the Award Ceremony, BIEFF 2016's Jury members:
PAOLO BERTOLIN — Member of the Selection Committee, Venice International Film Festival
ULRICH ZIEMONS — Program Coordinator, Berlin International Film Festival, Forum Expanded
LUDOVIC CHAVAROT — Member of the Selection Committee, Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival - Compétition LABO
ROEE ROSEN — Visual artist and filmmaker, Winner of the BIEFF 2011 & 2014 Main Awards
XANDRA POPESCU — Artist and co-curator at Atelier 35, Bucharest
decided as follows:

BIEFF 2016 - Buffalo Juggalos, de Scott Cummings

The BIEFF 2016 MAIN AWARD (3,000 EUR offered by the Romanian Cultural Institute) went to director Scott Cummings, for his film Buffalo Juggalos. The jury motivated its choice as follows: “Seemingly simple in its punk attitude this film is, in fact, a subtle genre-defying work in which tableaux vivants are also a narrative structure, mask and make-up claim to convey real identities, and a sense of integrity is established through irreverent social disavowal. We are gradually drawn to partake in a sub-culture without ever reducing or bracketing it.”

BIEFF 2016 - I Remember Nothing, de Zia Anger

The BEST DIRECTOR AWARD (1,500 EUR in post-production services offered by Cinelab România) went to Zia Anger for I Remember Nothing. BIEFF Jury statement: “In a dramatic restaging of the five phases of an epilepsy attack this film depicts a high-school softball player’s sexually induced out-of-body experience. With its uncanny, quiet, yet forceful rhythm, using multiple actresses for the main part and multi-layered sonic textures, the film creates a heightened sense of artificiality.”

BIEFF 2016 - The Park, de Randa Maroufi

The BEST VISUAL CONCEPT AWARD (1,500 EUR in post-production services offered by Cinelab România) went to The Park by Randa Maroufi. BIEFF Jury statement: “In a stylistically succinct investigation of virtual self-representation, this film skillfully interweaves flat and round, still and moving, real and virtual images of youth in revolt suspended in mid-action, unstuck in time. Through the eye of the director’s floating camera a derelict fairground in Casablanca becomes the terrain for serious play, for violent games and casual posing.” The film was presented in partnership with LE FRESNOY - Studio National des Arts Contemporains.

BIEFF 2016 - The Reflection of Power, de Mihai Grecu

The BEST ROMANIAN FILMMAKER AWARD (1,000 EUR offered by UCIN - The Romanian Filmmakers’ Union) went to Mihai Grecu for The Reflection of Power. BIEFF Jury statement: “This award is presented to a director whose continued use of 3D technologies remains very personal. Remodelling the city of Pyongyang as it is immersed in a sudden flood, the film allows us to understand - at the same time - the absurdity of a system that is running out of breath and the tragedy that the North Korean people experience on a daily basis.“

BIEFF 2016 - Freud and Friends, de Gabriel Abrantes

The SPECIAL JURY MENTION went to Freud and Friends by Gabriel Abrantes. BIEFF Jury statement: “A hilarious exploration of unsettling dreamscapes that questions male self, placing the director himself at the center of an outrageously playful reinvention and re-appropriation of tropes from cinema and television. Conjugating glowing cinematic savoir faire and startling satirical touches, this film leads the viewer through a trip into entertainment, both as a mode of fruition and as a set of references that can nurture and highlight the enjoyment of the cinematic experience.“ The film was presented in partnership with Portugal Film.

The Award Ceremony was followed by the Romanian premiere of the provocative experimentalist Peter Greenaway’s erotically charged and artfully crafted Eisenstein in Guanajuatoworld premiered at the Berlinale Film Festival. The screening was possible due to the kind support of Films Boutique and the British Council.
During the 7 festival days our audiences enjoyed 6 International Competition theme programs: Transgressive Bodies, Digital Dystopias, Journeys into Subconscious, Danger Is My Business, The Artist Is Present, Urban Rituals, as well as a series of special theme programs presented in partnership with several prestigious international film festivals and institutions: Quinzaine des Réalisateurs Cannes, Berlinale Forum Expanded, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, Cinedans - Dance on Screen Festival Amsterdam.
